My son stood in his crib mesmerized by the hairy clump clutched in his chubby hand. He looked at my bare head and back again to his fist, trying to work out what just happened. I had successfully dodged his hair-pulling for weeks but that morning I was just too tired. My gut tumbled over. My throat tightened and I fought to keep my face neutral.
Oh Alana, this was such a touching story of a cancer diagnosis in the midst of toddlerhood--you have so beautifully articulated all the crazy mixed up emotions in such an honest way.
